While accordian-wielding Canadians continue to be the inexplicable flavour of the year in Dublin, LCD Soundsystem are pulling a few less punters; their Oct 20 gig at Tripod still has tickets left at Ticketbastard. Go on, you know you want to. It also looks like they’re adding a second night at the Temple Bar Music Centre on Friday the 19th…

Of Montreal

Of Montreal played Crawdaddy in Dublin last night. It was a good gig, in a packed venue full of happy fans singing along (especially the bunch from Waterford!); the Nokia branding didn’t really suit though, and the sound could have done with a bit more volume, but hey.

Still, they played a blazing version of ‘The Past is a Grotesque Animal’, worth it for that alone:

It was only when I saw them live that I realised how much of a Bowie thing they have, making these live covers pretty apt:

Midnight Juggernauts

Os Mutantes last night was great, despite missing a couple of members due to illness. That dreadlocked girl on the { drums / misc percussion } made a definite impression…

The gig wasn’t exactly jammers, but I think pretty much the entire Dublin Brazilian community made it out.

Next up is Of Montreal, next Wednesday, who apparently occasionally do the odd Os Mutantes cover themselves. The ticket situation isn’t too hot for this one, but fingers crossed anyway.

A good new acidic arpeggiation tune:

Jape a la Space Disco

Space disco tip: Dublin dude Jape has had his great tune “Floating” remixed by Prins Thomas; it sounds fantastic, recommended. Pick it up over at Talking In Stereo.

Eno and the Winkies Peel Session

Just came across this Brian Eno rarity — the “Eno and the Winkies” March 1974 Peel Session:

Baby’s On Fire – the “Here Come the Warm Jets” opener, and a classic. Not quite as heavy with guitar riffage as the album version, though. Segues into:
Totalled – what was eventually released as “I’ll Come Running” on “Another Green World”. This is definitely the session’s highlight for me; I love this tune.
The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch – this is a bit like the “Here Come The Warm Jets” version, but without the squalls of synth “solo” halfway through that makes that version such a classic.
Fever – ick, best avoided; a not-so-hot cover version. :(

“Totalled” is well worth a listen — check out the “You’re No Good”-style 2-track interference solo in the middle!

My City’s a Sucker

Seems Mr Murphy and co will be gracing our shores for an additional gig, on top of the Electric Picnic one, on October 20th at Tripod in Dublin. Yay! Sign me up!

Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve

I’ve been really getting into Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve recently.

As far as I can tell, there are two angles to their music. First off, there’s their remixing of today’s tunes, epitomised by the amazing work they did on
Midlake’s “Roscoe”:

That was my gateway tune — to both Midlake *and* BTWS. It takes the original (an awesome song in its own right, more on this at some stage), and mellows it out nicely, with a pretty light touch. Their work on Findlay Brown’s “Losing the Will to Survive” is similar:

It’s hard to put a finger on what to call the style. It’s not full-on psychedelic rock; it’s a little more folky, really, with some psych tinges. I dunno; whatever, it sounds great to me.

Then there’s the edits of much more out-there classic psychedelic and krautrock tunes on their limited-edition releases, such as “Dig It” and “A Path Through The Forest” (pick up mp3’s here). The latter, I think, is a re-edit of The Factory’s classic psych tune which appears on Nuggets II:

There’s also a cover of Neu!’s uber-classic Hallogallo floating about, titled “I Swim Around”.

Anyway, these tunes — remixes of old and new — are all top of my playlist right now, and are sending me back to Nuggets (again). Bet their set went down
a storm at Glasto ;)
