Moving house!
August 23, 2007
Hey — update your bookmarks! WordPress.com has a few limitations, like not being able to change the HTML for this blog, so I’m moving on.
The new home for Undersea Community is over here.
As a farewell, enjoy — the Nunavut coat of arms:

and a dancing Dude:

see you on the other side…
2000007
August 21, 2007
Great new tune from the new Modeselektor album, “Happy Birthday”:
Modeselektor - 2000007 (Featuring TTC)
TTC v Modeselektor — always brilliant. Modeselektor are playing Dublin in November. Check the live set in that post…

Quick Italo post
August 20, 2007
Apparently Dan Deacon was just brilliant. I’m on contractions-watch, so no gigs for me!
Anyway, I’m going back through the CBS.nu Top 100, listening to lots of great italo. Haven’t seen this 1984 slice of tune posted around, but it definitely deserves listening — enjoy:
Jo Squillo Eletrix - Avventurieri
(includes a little free bonus chat from I-F at the end!)
Dan Deacon
August 16, 2007
Don Rosco informs me that Dan Deacon, absurdist kiddycore electro guy from Baltimore, is playing tomorrow night at Crawdaddy in Dublin. Sounds like it’d be mental:
Dan Deacon - Wham City (thanks to ÜberDrivel)

There’s an excellent Modeselektor live set over at magooo; apparently they’ll be playing in the Tivoli in Dublin, November 1st….
Rollerball
August 15, 2007

Quick bit of futuristic-pervy-funk, from the Rollerball soundtrack by Andre Previn:
Jimmy again
August 14, 2007
The other day, I posted a link to “Jimmy”, the best track off M.I.A.’s new album, Bollywood-meets-disco style:
turns out it’s a cover. DJ Bwyse at Talking in Stereo brings the original:
Bappi Lahiri, Chorus, Kishore Kumar, Nandu Bhende, Parvati K - Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja
LCD Soundsystem adding another night
August 13, 2007
While accordian-wielding Canadians continue to be the inexplicable flavour of the year in Dublin, LCD Soundsystem are pulling a few less punters; their Oct 20 gig at Tripod still has tickets left at Ticketbastard. Go on, you know you want to. It also looks like they’re adding a second night at the Temple Bar Music Centre on Friday the 19th…
RIP Lee
August 7, 2007

RIP Lee Hazlewood; that renal cancer got him in the end.
You can still download “Some Velvet Morning” from my post from last year, and here’s another:
The Human League
August 3, 2007
I just picked up The Human League’s first two albums, “Reproduction” and “Travelogue”, brilliant pioneering synth-pop from the band’s original line-up in 1979 and 1980:
The Human League - Zero As A Limit
This tune has cropped up in the odd Ladytron DJ set:
The Human League - Empire State Human
This one contains the synth bassline that Joakim’s remix of Cajuan’s “Raven” sampled earlier this year:
M.I.A. - Jimmy
August 2, 2007
I’m loving this new track from the freshly-leaked upcoming M.I.A. album, “Kala” (upload via wongie’s music world) — Bollywood disco!
Of Montreal
August 2, 2007
Of Montreal played Crawdaddy in Dublin last night. It was a good gig, in a packed venue full of happy fans singing along (especially the bunch from Waterford!); the Nokia branding didn’t really suit though, and the sound could have done with a bit more volume, but hey.
Still, they played a blazing version of ‘The Past is a Grotesque Animal’, worth it for that alone:
Of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal
It was only when I saw them live that I realised how much of a Bowie thing they have, making these live covers pretty apt:
Of Montreal - Moonage Daydream (live)
Of Montreal - Suffragette City (live)
(They went for a Kinks cover for the encore this time)
Mind you, I should have read Pitchfork before I went, then I’d have realised that they have a new EP out and bought that instead of 2005’s “Sunlandic Twins” album. :( ah well, time to fork out for the MP3s!
New Kanye video
July 27, 2007
You know, forget the Akira-homage “Stronger” vid — this is pure genius.
Midnight Juggernauts
July 27, 2007
Os Mutantes last night was great, despite missing a couple of members due to illness. That dreadlocked girl on the { drums / misc percussion } made a definite impression…
The gig wasn’t exactly jammers, but I think pretty much the entire Dublin Brazilian community made it out.
(Update: Nialler9 has some photos and videos up.)
Next up is Of Montreal, next Wednesday, who apparently occasionally do the odd Os Mutantes cover themselves. The ticket situation isn’t too hot for this one, but fingers crossed anyway.
From a totally different angle — some new Aussie electropop, via Fluokids:
Others
July 26, 2007
woo, looking forward to Os Mutantes tonight! Got the tickets in my pocket…
In the meantime, here’s some drug-reference loaded bubblegum psychedelia off of “Fancy Mix 3″:
There’s an interview with various members of the Others at Fancy Mag, if you’re curious.
Acid quickie
July 19, 2007
A good new acidic arpeggiation tune:
(very reminiscent of Aphex Twin’s “Polynomial C”). And a classic from 1988:
Jape a la Space Disco
July 13, 2007
Space disco tip: Dublin dude Jape has had his great tune “Floating” remixed by Prins Thomas; it sounds fantastic, recommended. Pick it up over at Talking In Stereo.
Eno and the Winkies Peel Session
July 13, 2007
Just came across this Brian Eno rarity — the “Eno and the Winkies” March 1974 Peel Session:
Baby’s On Fire - the “Here Come the Warm Jets” opener, and a classic. Not quite as heavy with guitar riffage as the album version, though. Segues into:
Totalled - what was eventually released as “I’ll Come Running” on “Another Green World”. This is definitely the session’s highlight for me; I love this tune.
The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch - this is a bit like the “Here Come The Warm Jets” version, but without the squalls of synth “solo” halfway through that makes that version such a classic.
Fever - ick, best avoided; a not-so-hot cover version. :(
“Totalled” is well worth a listen — check out the “You’re No Good”-style 2-track interference solo in the middle!
My City’s a Sucker
July 12, 2007
Seems Mr Murphy and co will be gracing our shores for an additional gig, on top of the Electric Picnic one, on October 20th at Tripod in Dublin. Yay! Sign me up!
Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve
July 11, 2007
I’ve been really getting into Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve recently.
As far as I can tell, there are two angles to their music. First off, there’s their remixing of today’s tunes, epitomised by the amazing work they did on
Midlake’s “Roscoe”:
Midlake - Roscoe (Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve Remix) (via World’s Fair News)
That was my gateway tune — to both Midlake *and* BTWS. It takes the original (an awesome song in its own right, more on this at some stage), and mellows it out nicely, with a pretty light touch. Their work on Findlay Brown’s “Losing the Will to Survive” is similar:
Findlay Brown - Losing the Will to Survive
It’s hard to put a finger on what to call the style. It’s not full-on psychedelic rock; it’s a little more folky, really, with some psych tinges. I dunno; whatever, it sounds great to me.
Then there’s the edits of much more out-there classic psychedelic and krautrock tunes on their limited-edition releases, such as “Dig It” and “A Path Through The Forest” (pick up mp3’s here). The latter, I think, is a re-edit of The Factory’s classic psych tune which appears on Nuggets II:
The Factory - A Path Through The Forest
There’s also a cover of Neu!’s uber-classic Hallogallo floating about, titled “I Swim Around”.
Anyway, these tunes — remixes of old and new — are all top of my playlist right now, and are sending me back to Nuggets (again). Bet their set went down
a storm at Glasto ;)
